Overview:

The aim of this interactive session is to review the principles of closures of surgical wounds in the face and provide practical experience and training with the advanced reconstruction in different regions of the face. The target audience will comprise of dermatologists who have basic experience with surgery and would like to improve their skills with surgical excisions of the face. After short introductory talks the participants will be divided into groups and will be presented a series of challenging cases of facial tumors or surgical defects for reconstruction. The proposals will be discussed within the groups and selected cases will also be brought for comments and discussion by all participants. The session will end with a self-assessment test.

Learning objectives:

After attending this workshop the participants should be able to 

  1. understand and apply the principles of reconstruction of surgical defects in the face
  2. obtain best functional and aesthetic outcome, design side-to-side closures and flaps in different facial regions

Level of proficiency: 

Basic knowledge of skin surgery required. Ideally the participants should have participated in the basic or intermediate surgery workshops on Thursday (chaired by Dr. Muche) and/or have clinical experience with simple excisions.

15 min Principles of reconstruction in the face: Focus on primary closures and simple advancement flaps (Robert Gniadecki)

15 min Group task 1. (all)

15 min Discussion of the group task 1 (all)

15 min Useful flaps: nose and lips (Annik Van Rengen)

15 min Group task 2. (all)

15 min Discussion of the group task 2. (all)

15 min Useful flaps: lower eyelid and ear (Stijn Kouwenhoven)

15 min Group task 3.

15 min Discussion of the group task 3.

15 min Self-assessment cases. 

The audience will be presented with 5 cases (screen and paper) and will have to design their own closure (Robert Gniadecki)
